After testing both the orchestral and solo Compàs 180 from Velvet Strings, I have come to the conclusion that these strings are excellent.
The strings release the pressure on the instrument and give it much more resonance. After sometime, when the instrument and player have settled in, comparison of this set up with the conventional metal core strings clearly indicates that there is a tremendous gain in quality.
The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra bass group sounds warmer and deeper, and the sound blends much better with the cellos.
The solo strings have more nobility, and, in combination with the grand piano, are deeper, warmer more distinguished and better audible when listening from a distance.
The player has to get used to the effect that the loudness for his own ears is somewhat modest, and that he needs to use more bowspeed.
Listening to his own bass from a distance, he will discover that the opposite effect of what he heard is clearly noticeable. There is simply more and better quality of sound. These strings have the quality of the most expensive metal wound gut strings, while the results are even better and the strings less vulnerable.
Velvet Strings are truly innovative. Looking at it from a different angle, it could be said that the lost qualities of Bottesini's silk strings have been rediscovered.
I highly recommend these fantastic strings!
